Smith Residence

SITE
A ½ acrs lot, with woodland to the side, and rear (10 minutes from Georgetown, Washington, DC), which has several terraces stepping down to a stream below. The stream curves around the left and rear of the lot, creating a peninsula, which has view to the hollow.

PROGRAM
The client, a single Washington DC lawyer, wanted a house that had a traditional appearance in the front-New England country house with a stone entry similar to the one he grew up in-as well as in the front rooms (Formal rooms: Foyer, Living and Dining Rooms), to blend into this traditional area. However, in the rear of the house he wanted bright, open spaces which take advantage of the views and the sun.

SOLUTION
The traditional portion of the house is contained in the front, rectangular part of the plan, while the rear family, media, and kitchen areas are contained in the rotated square and adjacent spaces. The hall acts as a spatial joint between the rotated square and the rectangular portion of the house. The rotated square plan signals a change in spatial quality and protrudes into the peninsula formed by the stream bed, providing new views of the hollow. These views are also accessible in the areas adjacent to the family area, including the first floor kitchen and media areas and the second floor loft master bedroom and study. There is a powder room in the corner of the family area which blocks the view to the rear of the house from the traditional foyer, until one walks past it. Beyond the powder room, one sees the house open up into a 3 story family area overlooking the hollow. To give the kitchen plenty of light, open space and views, the entire exterior wall above the counters is a window with two glass faced cabinets on either side of the kitchen sink. There is a breakfast window seat and a master bath bay window to allow these areas to have light and view as well. A 3’-0” deep eave and solar shades shade the windows on the southern elevations. A cantilevered stair in the family area orients one to the views as one ascends and descends the stairs. Stainless steel cable railing help keep the space open around the floor openings in the family area and the balcony.
