Penthouse Addition/Renovation
Two penthouse condos were joined and renovated to create a unique living and entertaining space for the French mathematician and his family to celebrate the social preparation and consumption of food and wine with friends and family and occasional art exhibits.. The ceiling was opened to the roof slab to allow for a hierarchy of spaces and materials and orderly exposure of mechanical, electrical and plumbing including LED lighting at 4000 K throughout for vibrant color rendering. . Lots of wall space and lighting were dedicated to artwork. The entry hall is punctuated by the glass wine storage. Stainless steel for the modern semi professional kitchen is balanced with the organic presence of wood. This space also includes an alcove for a home office as the client works from home. The bedrooms are along the east wall for their live-in child and 3 older children visiting. The bedrooms connect between themselves to provide a larger private, yet connected space. An intimate dining area/cafe is located adjacent to a curved window and intersection of private and open living spaces. The clients so embraced the design that they ran the construction administration themselves.
Design and Wellbeing: The renovation works to turn a penthouse condominium into a space to enhance the wellbeing of the family living there. The design is minimal and calm with warm, Biophilic organic wood throughout balancing the colder concrete and stainless steel. The dimmable 4000K LED lighting throughout brings the artwork and plants to life and has a natural sunlight color to be enjoyed at the appropriate level of Lumens for the activity and time of day. There is a soaking tub in a bathroom for relaxation. The condo is already in a walkable neighborhood and combined with the light and green views of plants inside and outside is correlated with greater wellbeing, longevity and less chronic diseases in several studies...
